ALTU Studios is our home right in the thick of things on Dublin’s bustling Camden Street. In the new world of hybrid-working we’ve taken a close look at out present and future needs to inform a space with flexibility that fosters community, culture and collaboration. As working patterns change, our space can adapt with it.

The design allows for fluctuations in staff and visitor numbers providing desk spaces, touch down spaces, informal and formal meeting spaces and multi-functional spaces, making use of every square inch available. Movable furniture was utilised to accommodate future changes as they arise. The interiors take on our branding concept of calm, muted tones with accents of more vibrant colours and materials.

We look forward to seeing you at ALTU Studios!

ALTU were engaged to design an innovative, urban scheme for Merrion Row – a mixed-use development on a constrained and sensitive site directly adjacent to St. Stephen’s Green.

The proposed development consists of restaurant/retail use at ground floor, with twenty four apartment units accommodated on the upper floors. The proposed scheme when delivered, will integrate appropriately with the nature of the surrounding urban fabric, which is characterised by a range of buildings of varying heights and scale, whilst introducing an element of high-quality modern architecture to this central location.

An innovative design approach was taken to maximise both density and height opportunity on corner site, addressing existing streetscape and roofscape.

ALTU were engaged by Boulder Media – an Irish animation company forming part of the global entity Hasbro Inc. – to design and deliver their new Dublin HQ Office to accommodate their diverse team of 320 people.

The principal objective of the scheme was to accommodate some of the world’s best 2D and 3D Animators, Artists and Designers within an inspiring, vibrant and dynamic work place environment, that will see teams ranging from 50-90 people collaborating on projects called ‘pipes’.

ALTU worked with Boulder in a fully collaborative design process, that included the creation of unique animations which were integrated throughout and informed the surrounding interior strategy and material palettes. Each meeting room is designed and named based on a character from a Production.

Spatial programming was organised into neighbourhoods for each Animation Team generally consisting of 25 to 50 staff working on a single production. ‘Pod’ meeting rooms, each named after characters from Boulder productions, break up each neighbourhood, while also providing a small meeting room to discuss and review animations.

The exterior walls of each Pod are made of pinnable and writeable surfaces to foster collaboration at the heart of each neighbourhood and encourage the display of new ideas and artwork.

We are thrilled to be partnering with Dunnes Stores for their upcoming store project on Crumlin Road. The vision for the project is to replace the existing dated and largely vacant Crumlin Shopping Centre with a new mixed-use shopping centre development. The new Dunnes anchor will be located on the ground floor, alongside service retail units and independent food and beverage offers. The overall footprint of the proposed building is 16,892 sqm, with an overall height of 12.9m. The design features a uniquely shaped roof, resembling a wave, which will serve as a distinct visual landmark for the new building. The planned shopping centre will not only invigorate the area, but also benefit the community with the addition of cafés, florist, medical centre, gym, and food market. A mobility hub is also planned to promote multi-modal transport, and the incorporation of improved landscaping will transform the site’s appearance. The transportation and traffic design was developed to allow for seamless integration with the future Bus Connect network. To support the expansion of Dublin’s EV charging network, the car park has been future-proofed for future charging points, including 80 EV spaces in the first instance.

At the end of 2016, our Client identified the requirement for a larger premises to cater for the needs of its expanding business.

The project brief was to provide a vibrant open plan work space which would foster collaboration and shared learning, while also providing spaces for privacy and quiet working.

The Client also wanted a unique space which represented the company’s core values of collaboration, teamwork and a celebration of unique, quality design.  This was a Cat A & Cat B Fit Out of an existing first floor space to accommodate approx. 70 people.

The brief was achieved by providing a range of spaces from open collaboration areas of varying sizes, a multitude of closed meeting room sizes and a large town hall space, all of which are located around the perimeter of the central open plan area.

Residence for a private client in South Dublin.

The concept design consists in a series of pavilions at the ground floor wrapping the existing house box  and opening the plan out to the gardens. Vistas are created through the house to create connections between the different areas and a fully glazed double height space draws the eye up.

The feeling of permeability of the spaces is achieved through the full height glazing pavilions. This system allows natural light to flow deep into space creating different atmospheres based on the time of the day. Since the existing roof structure does not allow for use of the attic, the proposed replacement improves the family space and creates an additional a bedroom with a feature dormer. By using noble materials, the simplicity of the concept expresses a clean relation between form and function.

The ILAC Quarter Masterplan sets out a bold vision to transform a key city centre site into a vibrant, mixed-use urban district that re-establishes the ILAC Centre as a premier destination in Dublin’s core. Rooted in careful analysis of the existing urban structure and retail context, the concept proposes a renewed urban identity — one that reconnects with the surrounding street network while introducing a new, active heart to the city. At the centre of the proposal is a generous, covered-but-open Central Urban Square — a social and cultural hub defined by new food, leisure, and civic uses. This space acts as a meeting point, performance venue, and everyday gathering place, bringing new vibrancy and permeability to the historic city grain. The masterplan envisions a layered mix of uses including restaurants, hotel, residential, a city garden, a library, and a rooftop viewing platform overlooking Dublin. These components are arranged to form new street edges, activate Moore Street, and stitch the ILAC Centre into its urban surroundings with a finegrain and pedestrian-focused approach.

Ancestry, the global leader in family history and consumer genomics, appointed ALTU to undertake the initial due diligence and subsequent workplace fit out of their 14,000sqft new HQ in Dublin City Centre.

Working to a challenging three-month program and within the constraints of an occupied building, ALTU successfully designed and delivered an award winning and dynamic workplace scheme for the company’s 98 staff.

Meeting the client’s brief and strategic objectives, the design solution developed by ALTU integrated the company’s brand and image across a series of open plan workspaces married with innovative break-out, dynamic collaboration and amenity areas.

The project fully coordinated by ALTU in BIM, which was used throughout the work stages to inform the design, enable visualizations, assist scheduling and construction coordination.

The completed project was awarded ‘Fit Out Project of the Year’ and ‘Fit Out Project of the Year (Office Small)’ in the Irish Times Fit Out Awards 2013.

The South Extension development represents an integral part of the overall vision for The Square SC to create a regional retail, food and leisure destination at the heart of an integrated town centre.

The proposed development includes relocating the Level 2 south entrance further to the south, with food and beverage units above this area at Level 3 adjacent to a new landscaped public plaza.

This plaza will link directly into the Centre through a new Level 3 entrance in the existing façade which will link into the central pyramid atrium. The plaza is proposed as an active and managed recreational space with a range of different uses as well as areas to sit, meet and eat.

The food and beverage units on Level 3 will open into the plaza and have terraces to the south enjoying the southerly aspect and views to the Dublin mountains. A Market Hall is also provided containing various smaller boutique food & beverage offerings.

The building will present as a two-storey structure from the south and a single storey structure from the plaza to the north with active restaurant and café frontages and terraces along all of its principal elevations, anchored by an iconic feature entrance portal.

Planning was granted for the proposed scheme in the Summer of 2020.
